So I've been thinking about voting Green on Monday.
Current party distribution: PC: 124 Lib: 101 BQ: 50 NDP: 29 Ind: 2
Adding a vote to any of those parties doesn't do much to shift the balance of power with respect to coalitions.
Electing Elizabeth May as the first Green Party candidate will be a symbolic gesture that will force Canada to think more seriously about its environmental responsibilities. And people will stop making fun of us at UN summits.

I would have agreed with you last election, but the green party doesn't seem like it can gain any ground in federal elections even though it's becoming more popular. I'm going NDP this year.

Hmmm yeah. I don't know if I want them to have any kind of major power in parliament (they seem like kind of a limited-issue party to me -- I'm open to someone correcting me on this though). But I just think it would be a good news item.
Anyone know what the polls are like? Fontana's been pretty comfortable, how are his replacement's chances?
Also FYI: All-candidates meeting today at 5pm, Kingsmill Room at Huron.

How do you feel that the NDP is a limited issue party. I mostly vote NDP or Green - I would say a pretty even 50/50 split. But I am curious as to why you think they are a limited issue party?

LB: Sorry I meant Green was limited-issue. I usually vote NDP too.
I just came from that debate, and was actually quite impressed with Elizabeth May (Green). I'm also less ready to call them limited-issues now, I like where they stand on other things too. I think I've made up my mind.
Megan Walker (NDP) was unfortunately a little lackluster... and Diane Haskett (C) got smoked: "I guess I'm the only one on this panel who believes in the traditional definition of marriage" (loud booing from the crowd, cries of "for shame!")
Glen Pearson (Lib) was pretty strong too, he sounds like he has an impressive record on international human rights work and was a pretty smooth guy. I think he's got a shot.

i'm somewhat going back and forth between Green and NDP now, simply because May is the green party leader. If she were to get into parliament then that would be great for Canadian politics on the whole. hmmmmm.

i'm stuck between green and ndp too. we should all just pick one. i mean its really, at this stage in the game, just about numbers. im thrilled to see we're all in the same sphere politically, its good to know the people around you are ideologically compatible. i wonder how much has to do with our education at uwo...? i'm really leaning toward green though jsut because i have never voted for them before and the environment is cool and maybe they will be interested in legalizing weed. that is the green party right? i'm such an informed voter....hahahah

LOL @ aaa
You're thinking of the marijuana party of Canada, which exists, and no, they will never get voted in.
The Green party is more environmentally based, not just a bunch of potheads. For the most part they're concerned with lowering emissions, and getting Canada back as a peacekeeper, strengthening the softwood lumber laws, and maintaining and improving the Kyoto protocol. Their fiscal plans are actually not particularly strong, but I attribute that to the fact that they're trying to appeal to a broad range of people (and they have appealed to the left-side of the spectrum), and the Right tends to be uncaring of the environment (not entirely though).
As far as the Quebec issue, I haven't heard anything official, but I think it's safe to assume they've sided with the majority (see: all Canadian parties except the Bloc) in the decision to have Quebec a "nation within Canada." And actually, today Duceppe agreed to this.
Anyway, I've been a lifelong Green supporter (I've never voted for another party), and I think that getting them a seat in this election would be hugely important for the country, mostly because it'll show the other parties that the Green party does have support, and that Canadians are concerned about issues that effect not just them, but everything. It'll also create a position of environmental awareness (which, just a side fact: Walker and the NDPs claim to have "thought" of the environment before it was trendy, but in actuality what they're proposing is essentially offshoots of what the Greens brought forward first...)
Anyway, that's just a little bit of backstory. As long as Haskett doesn't get in power, I'll consider this election a success. Have you heard some of her insane rantings??

Haskett terrifies me. I'm worried about lingering support she'll have from her stint as mayor a decade ago (during which time, by the way, she refused to sanction a gay pride parade... and was thereafter fined $10,000 for violating human rights... and thereafter was voted in AGAIN... full article). I say we go green. As Mark says, if there's anything they're weak on it's fiscal policy, which isn't really an issue since they're not going to be drafting the budget. And aaa (Arianne?) - I always wonder that too, about how much of a bubble the University is. Homophobia, for example, is like this absurd, pathetic, outdated 1940s concept to us... but that's not the case outside our circles.

Anyone know if it's too late to get on the voters list and/or how to get on it? Usually I vote back home, but since its a by-election... may as well get a say in here.
oh yeah, a^3, your notice to vote or whatever it's called is sitting in my doorway I think. Sometimes that really creeps me out.

You need to find out what your polling station is. You can search using your address at www.elections.ca/home.asp. For some reason, that didn't work for me, so I had to call the returning officer for London North Centre. Here's the info on what you need to bring if you're not already on the list (document(s) showing address and signature, doens't have to be same document though). Returning office is open 12-4 today, 9-9 monday: 1 866 241-7804 Polling stations are open 8:30-8:30 Monday. VOTE! And get all your friends to stop being lazy bitches and vote too.

The best part was in the last election, for some reason the elections Canada office recognized I was a London West member, but still also thought I was a Flamborough-Ancaster-Freelton-Aldershot member as well (my old hometown riding). So naturally, on voting day I went and voted twice, both for Green.
And they say your vote doesn't make a difference...

Though they also say it's illegal to vote twice in a federal election ;-)
